This is a valid shortest path in the active three-letter dictionary: CAT → COT changes the third letter, COT → COG changes the third letter again, and COG → DOG changes the first letter. CAT and DOG differ in three positions, so no route can use fewer than three one-letter moves.
More than one shortest route can be valid. The deterministic solver may show CAT → CAG → COG → DOG instead, because it searches the same reviewed word list in a fixed order. Both routes have three legal moves; compare every adjacent pair rather than assuming that only one answer is correct.

A solver turns that rule into a searchable graph: every accepted word is a node, and two nodes are connected when they differ at exactly one position. The useful answer is not a guess that looks close to the target. It is a complete chain that can be checked from the first word to the last.

The solver uses breadth-first search (BFS), a standard shortest-path algorithm for an unweighted graph. It starts at the first word and examines every legal one-letter neighbor at distance one. Next it examines the neighbors that are two moves away, then the next layer, and so on. Because every move costs one rung, the first time the target is reached, the route has the fewest steps available in the current dictionary. The tool records a parent for each discovered word, then follows those parents backward to reconstruct the route you see.
“Shortest” has a precise scope here. It means shortest among the words in this pinned, licensed English list and under the rule that exactly one letter changes per move. It does not mean that every game, printed puzzle book, or larger dictionary will return the same route. If two routes have the same length, the order in which the dictionary is searched can make either valid route appear first. The important promise is that each displayed edge is legal and that the route length is minimal for this word list.
A “no path” result is usually a dictionary boundary, not proof that two words can never be connected in English. Word lists disagree about plurals, inflections, proper nouns, abbreviations, slang, regional spelling, and specialist vocabulary. A game may also use a private list that accepts a word we intentionally exclude. The solver reports what it can prove from the active list and does not quietly substitute a scraped or unlicensed word.
Check the input first: both words must use the same number of letters, and unusual capitalization or punctuation should be removed. If the words are valid but disconnected, try the same puzzle in the game's own dictionary or ask for a hint rather than assuming the target is impossible.
