A four-level help system

Word ladder strategy that keeps the solve yours.

A useful hint should restart your thinking, not replace it. Move from a broad direction to one concrete rung and stop the moment the ladder opens up.

    One rung

Reveal a single legal word, then return to the puzzle.

METHOD 01

Mark what differs.

Compare start and target by position. The mismatched letters define the work ahead, but they do not dictate its order.

METHOD 02

Search both ways.

A difficult opening may have an easy ending. Build a short branch from each side and look for a shared middle word.

METHOD 03

Preserve patterns.

Common pairs such as st, ch, or ar can be safer anchors than isolated letters.

The legality check

Word ladder rules before you ask for a hint.

A legal ladder keeps the word length fixed and changes exactly one letter per move. Every rung must be an accepted word for the puzzle you are playing; changing two letters, rearranging letters, or relying on a pronunciation change does not count. These rules are simple, but checking them after every move prevents most false starts.

  • Keep the same number of letters from start to finish.
  • Change one position only; leave the other positions untouched.
  • Use a real word accepted by the puzzle's own dictionary.
  • Read the route one edge at a time before trusting the final answer.

Choose your stopping point

Help should arrive in layers.

Begin with the least revealing card. Open another only if the previous one did not create a new legal move.

Worked example

Watch the changed position, not just the word.

In COLD → WARM, every row changes exactly one tile. The highlighted tile is the only legal change on that move.

Example route4 changes
  1. 01
  2. 02letter 3
  3. 03letter 2
  4. 04letter 1
  5. 05letter 4

Each row changes one position. Every row remains a word.

03

When the ladder still will not move

Use the full tool deliberately.

The solver searches a pinned licensed word list for a shortest available route. It now begins with only the first rung visible, so even the full tool does not force the complete answer onto the screen.

Hint desk FAQ

Small questions, clear rules.

What is the best first word ladder hint?

Start by comparing the two endpoints and testing one legal neighbor from each side. This gives direction without revealing a rung.

Should I always move toward the target letters?

No. A temporary move away from the target can open a common word pattern and create the shortest route.

When should I use the complete solver?

Use it when the next move matters more than preserving the challenge. You can still reveal the result one rung at a time.
